German Samurai Disarmed By Clever Cop

toast says...

It is ok for us to sit here and judge the situation from basic video footage, but the cops were there themselves and I am sure they are able to judge whether it was safe to approach.

The police were very good and brave to not have taken the "easy" way out and shot him. If they had tasered him - there is a possibility that he could have died. How do we know he did not have problems mentally? At least taking him in alive they are able to give him a fair trial.

You give a cop a taser and it's likely he'll become too trigger happy and instead of using brains and techniques, a cop could easily become lazy and just tase people when ever a situation become sticky without thinking about it first.

Atheist Debaptism Ceremony

toast says...

^exactly...

each person can choose what they want to do. Just because a bunch of people picked up a hair dryer and a robe and said that we are doing a big ol' debaptism party doesn't undermine what others are doing e.g. Richard Dawkins. Fair enough if all of atheists just sit there making fun and making spoofs of organised religions - but, at least for me, I see many who take this topic seriously.

It's a breath of fresh air away from the doom and gloom and it was a laugh obviously for those attending and me watching.

People need to lighten up.

Bush On Al Qaeda Not In Iraq Before Invasion: "So What?"

toast says...

>> ^bcglorf:The overall invasion and removal of Saddam ended a reign of terror the likes of which the world rarely sees and unimaginably worse than most realize.

But it did not end a reign of terror. We know Saddam was terrible, but they are now just terrified of someone/something else.
The invasion has gotten rid of one evil and in its replacement is another evil.

Regardless of which one would win in a game of the "Battle of Evilness", both situations are pretty bad before and after Saddam.

Like previously mentioned, if there had been more planning and less lies mixed in with so many innocent deaths, we would all look at this endless undeclared war differently.

From what I had picked up, people who were previously living in OK standards are now in absolutely hell with families broken up and poor.

You're WRONG Bill! You're So WRONG Bill! You Don't Get It!

toast says...

We can fairly argue whether it was right for her to stop accepting new displays and allowing the previous ones to stay, or whether she should take them all down...

...but for Bill I'diot to go around saying that she was stopping free speech or stopping view points &c is not what has happened here.

IMO, if it is true that they have run out of space or that the displays have become overwhelming, it is fair enough to say stop to all new ones. If she had put in her original terms that the displays will be accepted on a first come first serve basis, we would not have anything to argue about.

Iraqi Ambassador On Shoe-Thrower: He’s ‘Very Lucky'

toast says...

The person who threw the shoe was exercising his freedom. He didn't hurt anyone and is unlikely to have hurt him much had that actually hit the target.
They have arrested the man just for being rude to the guest and the host basically.

Iraqi Journalist Throws Shoes at Bush

toast says...

>> ^JiggaJonson:
It's what he says afterward that really bothers me. "So he threw a shoe, so what?"

absolutely, that's what I thought. Did no one take him to the side for one second just to tell him the significance of this shoe-throwing? It is not the same as someone shouting or middle-fingering at him.

Bush somehow excused the guy's actions to be because he wanted attention. Does he not think for a second that it could be something else?

It annoys me that they can announce the next president, yet it still allows the current president to still hang around, unwanted. Why don't they announce the new president on the day they swap 'em over?

Guy Lives With A Fox

toast says...

A few interesting bit from http://edition.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0705/12/cnr.04.html

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Smile at the camera.

VERONICA DE LA CRUZ: He likes to cuddle and to be petted and take long walks into town. Cropper the fox is even popular with the kids. Unusual behavior for a wild animal, but this friendly fox can't survive in the wild on his own. A disease that affected his memory renders him incapable of hunting or defending himself. So Mike Trowler rescued and nursed cropper back to health, making him his pet, a relationship that took time to develop.

MIKE TROWLER, CROPPER'S OWNER: It started as trust and trust grew to familiarity and familiarity to affection. And now I can do virtually anything with him because he knows he's quite confident that whatever I do is going to be for his pleasure or his benefit. And it's wonderful. It's a superb relationship.

DE LA CRUZ: Looking more like a fur stole than a wild animal, Trowler takes cropper for a walk. He says this fox is like any family's dog or cat with one distinct flaw.

TROWLER: Fox urine has an unfortunate property. You can't wash it off. If you apply water to fox urine, the smell becomes a stench. It's a bit like switching on the amplifier at a disco.

DE LA CRUZ: So while cropper gets to run around the house during the day, Trowler says he does spend each night in this hut in a safe room with a view and the envy of all other foxes. Veronica de la Cruz, CNN, Atlanta.

Peter Schiff on being mr. Right

toast says...

>> ^volumptuous:
Neither of them, as far as I can find, have said anything productive. Just a lot of historical perspective, and the "how we got in this mess" routines.

They warned people at the time when they may have been able to fix/patch the problem, but everyone had a good laugh and now it's too late.

As Westy brilliantly put it, it's time for the kick in the balls because you've wound someone up too much for too long.

By delaying the kick in the balls when the ball crunching time comes, it's going to be extra, extra painful.

Unconstitutional search and seizure

toast says...

>> ^jonny:
And as for poor Ms. Newman here, she should brush up on her legal knowledge before going off like that. Implied consent allows police to set up random checkpoints wherever they want. It doesn't automatically allow a vehicle search, but abusive and uncooperative behavior pretty much does.

At what point was she abusive? He asked her a couple of times to tell him who she was and immediately he was there forcing her door open. How threatening is that.

I am not sure about whether it's illegal to not tell him who she was or not, but regardless she was making a stand. If more people made a stand, he would think twice before acting like that - the power has gone to his head.

She was happy to go and speak to his supervisor - why can't he take her in quietly to speak to him?

Man gets jail time for sitting down too slow in court

toast says...

>> ^punisher:
The problem was that he wasn't willing to follow the normal procedures for getting his side heard. If he had followed normal procedure, which was to begin with an arraignment to enter your plea.

The point is, he does not believe in the system and he does not want to 'play their game in order to get his side heard'
Each to their own - some try and fight for freedom using the system that we have and others believe that it is impossible to fix the system through the very same broken system.
