SNL - You Can Do Anything!

rychan says...

Yeah SNL might want to be careful throwing stones. Judging by the majority of their writing and acting, they don't have a great deal of self-awareness, either.

This skit (and perhaps 5% of skits in the last 20 years) was pretty good, though.

The ONLY difference between SNL crewmembers and the youtubers they're mocking is age.

All 91 of Lionel Messi's goals in 2012 (new world record)

rychan says...

Wow, several things jumped out at me:
(1) He's quite patient.
(2) He uses those "floating" balls quite well.
(3) You can't convince me that he's not the best futbal player in history.

Numberphile - The Fatal Flaw of the Enigma Code Machine

I do not understand at all why finding one contradictory plug setting, e.g. (t a) and (t g), means that every other plug setting you found during that trial was wrong. That cannot possibly be true. The space of possible plug connections (on the order of 26*25) is too small. You've probably got millions of trials that end in conflicting plug settings. You would end up invalidating all of them. I must be misunderstanding what he was trying to say.

Well that's not so different, is it? Won't the richest Americans pay 39% now?

Also, do you pay state and local taxes in Australia? Hard to make apple to apple comparisons. I don't know how sales tax vs VAT compares, etc.

Richest Americans will still be taxed lower than the highest marginal rate in Australia of 45%. Of course, we get services.

Trinity escapes ! ( Matrix Opening scene)

rychan says...

The "Matrix style" camera tricks look cheesy, but only because so many other movies overused it. Not fair to the original!

Regardless, it is such an amazing movie. Definitely in my top 10, maybe top 5.

Landslide Takes Out A Train

rychan says...

Did you guys watch the entire video (in 1080p)? It's clear that pieces of the hill were coming down for a while. He filmed it exactly because he thought a landslide might happen.

Joe Scarborough finally gets it -- Sandy Hook brings it home

Wait, has it been established that the killer was an avid gamer? That would make him completely typical, of course, but still I hadn't heard that.

I honestly don't think that video game or Hollywood violence is to blame for this. I think REAL violence, glorified by the news media, has far more impact, because most mentally ill people can tell the difference between fantasy and reality.

I think the blame falls squarely on our inability to identify serious mental health issues and easy access to semi-automatic firearms.

WW2 German Fighter Pilot Escorts American Bomber To Safety

rychan says...

I don't like this.
(1) There was no escort.
(2) There was no video.
(3) This is a (low quality) advertisement.
(4) The entire thing feels like glurge ( http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=glurge ). These guys might have killed many enemy airmen. Why show mercy at this point? Did the German fighter pilot make a habit of partially disabling planes and letting the crew fly home to pilot a new plane? Heck, that B-17 might have just gotten done bombing a German city.

War is such a terrible thing. This video makes me uneasy -- it makes it seem like there is honor, mercy, and order in a war in which tens of millions died horrible, anonymous deaths. This event is an exception that is contrary not just to the larger event, but to the morality of the very men involved.

It's like those photos of the happenstance cross in the WTC ruins.
