They said similar things about segway - that it will revolutionize personal transportation in large cities. But obviously that hasn't happened yet. Plus I get the feeling people would prefer segway more than this thing.

The Maltese Falcon: Greatest, Most advanced Yacht Ever

pro says...

I didn't find his ethics any different than that of an average human being. He probably gives to charity a similar fraction of his assets as most people. Everyone here could probably save poor little Ubutu's life back in Africa by say giving up Starbucks and donating the money. What does that mean? Should we all give up designer coffee? Can I have coffee if I send Ubutu some money? But then couldn't I always send more money by not having coffee? It's like the last scene from Schindler's list - you can always save another life by doing a little more. Most people in the west have to live with this paradox - that we choose to pursue pleasures that are decadent in comparison to the life lead by masses around the world. I don't know how else to deal with this paradox than to accept that I'm a prick and come to peace with what little I do to help my fellow human being; maybe even try to do a little more today than I did yesterday but like most 'noble' goals I fail at that on most days.

So in summary - for better or for worse, this guy is no different than most of us. No different in his ethics I mean - he is obviously much smarter and more gifted than most of us

Dogma - Evil is an Abstract

Interesting. I just read Sandman - Season of Mists, which is a great graphic novel. This idea that the pain inflicted in hell is at the beckoning of the sinners and not the Devil appears verbatim in the novel. Eventually Lucifer gets tired of this masochistic drama and kicks everyone out of hell against much resistance. Kevin Smith is a big comic book aficionado. I wonder if he was inspired by novel.

Matt Damon Actually Sounding Smart On Palin

pro says...

It seems all these aggressive anti-Palin stories are really strengthening the GOP base behind Palin. To the GOP base she comes across as a common soccer mom making a brave stand against a barrage of attacks coming from the liberal left. For example, the bit Matt Daemon did here about Palin's candidacy being something straight out of a bad Disney movie - the bit is funny, it is a valid/scary observation but it is polarizing. It is not likely to convert most people. If the argument against the McCain-Palin ticket is that a soccer mom with stronger Christian beliefs should not allowed near the presidency then the results of the 2004 election should tell you what America thinks of such arguments.

In my opinion, best to keep the arguments focused on the disaster that was the previous republican administration and how McCain's candidacy will be a continuation of that failed experiment. Use Palin's inexperience (and her likelihood of becoming the president) only to counter the right's argument that Obama is inexperienced. It is probably best to pull the punches regarding Palin's family, her Christian values, anything that may vaguely come across as sexist, any comments about the irrelevancy of her experience as a mom, PTA member, TV reporter, etc. The same goes for joking about McCain's overuse of his time spent in the prison camp. All these points while valid don't seem to be helping.

7 Minute Psytrance Documentary

Thanks djsunkid. Discovering this video just made my day.

I absolutely love psytrance. I totally identify with the narrator's statement - "We would look at each other confounded - 'like is this actually happening?'. And the only proof of this strange experience occurring was the eye contact".

When I first fell in love with this music I couldn't believe what was happening to me. There was a temptation to attribute magical/spiritual qualities to this music because no music had ever spoken to me like that. My first reaction was proselytizing. Whenever a psytrance track would hit me hard I would try to find a friend and share the track with them, thinking that it would have the same effect on them. How could it not? It took me several lukewarm reactions to outright ridicule to realize that this music does not have universal appeal. One of my best friends at the time said that - "this music sounds like robotic clowns farting". I find humor in his response now but at the time his reaction made me feel really sad that he couldn't experience this amazing thing that was happening to me. But since then I have come to realize that this experience is universal and is known by many different names, my favorite being - 'flow'. There is usually something in almost everyone's life that makes them feel like the way the narrator of this video feels at a psytrance party. It sounds like psytrance and painting induce flow in djsunkid. A good book on the subject is "Flow: The Psychology of optimal Experience".

Clifford Stoll: 18 minutes with an agile mind

pro says...

My main problem with this talk is that Clifford seems to be performing an act and not giving a talk, which I found quite distracting. I would be fine with the presentation if Clifford was geniunly as hyperactive and scattered as he comes across in this video. But from watching his other talks, his persona in this video seems so far removed from his actual self that the whole talk comes across as disingenuous. Sure, every talk needs a certain amount of showmanship, a certain amount of flair to enhance its reception. But Clifford emphasizes style way more than the content of his talk; its the kind of performance one would expect from Robin Williams if he was asked to portray John Nash in a remake of A Beautiful Mind.

Michael Herr - On Man's Darkside

pro says...

I think there is a more benign explanation as to why people in war experience such transcendence and it doesn't require humans necessarily having a dark side. I think their experience has to do with how seductive and how addictive the chemistry of stress can be. Recently I was working on a deadline that kept me under an immense amount of stress over an extended period of time. Towards the end I found every experience so heightened that could it only be described as transcendent - everything - the good, the bad - fear, joy, the way the music sounded, the lows, the highs - the intensity of all experience was just pushed to the extreme. Now that the deadline is over I sometimes romanticize about that period even though I know how painful it was. I'm almost looking forward to the next year's deadline.

I imagine these soldiers are experiencing a lot more stress than I did and they are similarly romanticizing this time of stress because of the meaning it gave their lives. But the good news is that people can achieve the same level of transcendence by other, less darker means. I don't think war has to be an integral part of the human condition.

Mike Huckabee has a Christmas wish for you and yours

pro says...

A recently came across an astute observation made by Karl Rowe. It went along the lines of: The next president of the united states is going to be mentally and physically exhausted by the time s/he gets to the white house from having run the longest campaign run in the history of American presidency. I agree. We are likely to see more and more candidates coming apart at the seams, like Huckabee here, over the next year.
