I knew we were hosed when I saw a credit card machine in a McDonald's. Sez I, "Ruh roh!" We have had an ongoing paradigm shift in terms of economics/finance/communication/transportation/regulation over the past twenty years. We won't know how to get through it until we get through it (if we do). Since everything is in a state of flux, one of the concepts I believe we have to rethink is the top-down management/ownership/governance ideology. The internet is showing us the value of bottom-up organization and generation. What we sorely need is education of a rigorous, persistent and emancipating fashion, to see human populations as incubators of entrepreneurship, innovation, progressive ideas. As biological evolution seems to show, smaller, smarter, more agile is the way to go for organisms; perhaps that is the way to go with human organization in industry, education, finance, governance. Seems counterintuitive, doesn't it?

The worst thing about this whole O'Reilly farce is that there are some people in this country who grow up in a household with a "man" like him as their father. Imagine being fed nonsense all your life and yelled down when you try to object. "Shut up, Beatrice! Shut up! Well, fuck it--go up to your room! No dinner for--fuck it!! Shut up! And if I hear a peep out of you, I'm going to bring up Mr. Jiggles!"

When I was in college at USC, I worked at the Business School as a proofreader/editor. I edited some things of Laffer's (I, a nineteen-year-old English major editing the "writings" of a full profesor in the Biz School; still makes me laugh). The man wrote as though he was typing with mittens on. I concluded then that he couldn't quite think straight.

Wow. The man was/is 100% correct, yet everyone was laughing at him. What's the old saying about a prophet and his home town?

Happy laughter time. And I remember when I used to think that he was the least talented member of In Living Color. Stupid me!

Gee, they don't even attack regular poverty? Just "extreme poverty"? So I guess that means they only attack it in 3rd World countries, because no one in America lives in a landfill or drinks water with fecal contaminants. Why don't they fight war, greed, pollution, overconsumption? I think my head will explode if I think about this too much.

I'm not about to give them much credit. For one, they vetoed the baking soda idea. For another, they didn't have a fire extinguisher handy. Third, they kept the propane nearby. Fourth, they set the thing up on a wooden deck. Fifth, the hose--he could have made a big, life-altering mistake. You don't get many points from me for pulling a victory out of the jaws of defeat because you were so stupid in the first place.

What gets me is the deadpanned delivery of all the newsfolks. What they should have said was, "Folks, you're not going to believe this next story about a moron, a .22 pistol, and a satellite cable. Proof if there ever was that Darwin was right. Take it away, Sandra!"
