Yup. I learned at a very young age not to sneer at softball pitchers. My Dad took me to see The King and His Court, a four man softball team that played against full nine-man teams. They won a majority of their games, and they were mostly playing for comedic effect (like the Globetrotters). That was almost entirely due to the pitcher. His pitches were clocked as fast as 104 mph.

There is no such thing as a legal Muslim ban, and so sure, this is probably the closest they can get to it, but nevertheless it is not a Muslim ban because a) it prohibits everyone from those countries, not just Muslims, and 2) there are still plenty of other countries that are predominantly Muslim that are not prohibited. They didn't even stop most countries that are are predominantly Muslim.

You might want to look into the history of it, Trump in his own words called for a Muslim ban during the campaign, and Giuliani revealed that this travel ban was his attempt to do a "Muslim Ban" in a way that wasn't clearly illegal. The intent is to target Muslims, the fact that it doesn't target all Muslims (like those from the richest countries) doesn't negate that.

I don't think this is the sort of thing that wouldn't be happening if not for Stanford, but rather it wouldn't be happening in a transparent and openly published way. The entertainment and gaming industries alone guarantee these techniques will make steady progress.
In the description they mention a big part of their work is the detection of video edits to verify the authenticity of videos. Trying to keep state of the art programming techniques in the public domain can only help us spot this stuff and be less gullible as a society.
