The Ultimate Paper Airplane

AeroMechanical says...

Seems to me they weren't focusing on the most interesting part. The cutting and gluing is all well and good, but whatever he is doing to create the designs is the amazing bit (granted, I'm sure it's on his Youtube channel).

Terrible flaw in expensive crowdfunded padlock

AeroMechanical says...

Meh, padlocks are not for securing valuable property or for securing property against someone with any sort of tools at all. They are for preventing opportunistic theft. 30 seconds to defeat the lock is plenty long enough for that. Of course, that is a pretty stupid design, so good video nonetheless. If I owned one already, a little solder or permanent loctite on the inner screws would probably do the trick.

Mostly though, The lock company lost me at $100 for the lock. A traditional dial is not *that* hard to work and I'd be worried about false negatives and dead batteries even with a high-quality finger print reader. Just buy a $10 padlock at the hardware store to lock up your garbage cans, or proper u-lock or quality cable to lock up your $600 bicycle (ie, something that will require 15 minutes to defeat).

Car pulls out of rest area without looking

AeroMechanical says...

That rest stop is very poorly designed. An on-ramp onto a freeway should be long enough to give merging traffic enough distance to accelerate to the speed of traffic on the freeway. Also, there should be signage to indicate there might be merging traffic.

To me, this looks very much a case of poor driving all around. The truck driver obviously wasn't paying attention to the on-ramp. He had six seconds to react and did nothing to avoid a collision for five of them. I imagine the letter of the law says that it's the merging car's responsibility to merge safely, but if you're driving in the outside lane past an on-ramp, you ought to be watching for merging traffic. Just having the right-of-way doesn't excuse you from being vigilant about avoiding accidents.

NY Police Ram Cyclist And Make Up Charges

AeroMechanical says...

That seems to be the police maneuver with bicycles. They've done that to me before: they come up along side you and then swerve to cut you off so unless you are on your toes you will collide with them. Heaven forbid they should just flash their lights and tell you to stop when they can just assume everyone is a deadly dangerous criminal. I blame Daryl Gates.

Brake Cleaner Fluid Vs Monster Energy Drink

AeroMechanical says...

I usually just sort of use whatever is to hand. Butane, rubbing alcohol, gasoline, carb cleaner, but these are all pretty flammable and/or toxic (WD-40 is good for some things, but then *that* is hard to clean off). If Monster works, that sounds good. So, like, does Doctor Pepper or Coke work too? I don't care for Monster, but I can drink the rest of the Doctor Pepper. Mountain Dew if I have to.

American Football player fires a minigun

AeroMechanical says...

Hm, so the minigun in Predator wasn't *quite* so ridiculous. Since we can grant Jesse Ventura an extra 50-75% strength since he was a fictional action hero, and since in action movies the weight and quantity of ammunition a character may carry (even if its's for miles and miles through a dense jungle) only matters if it is directly relevant to the plot, I think I now consider "Painless" a perfectly reasonable gun for fighting aliens and South American guerrillas.

Euthanasia Coaster

AeroMechanical says...

Would this really be fatal? As I understand it, it takes a couple sustained minutes before damage from hypoxia starts and a few minutes after that before you'd actually die. This is assuming it's the sustained G-LOC that kills you, which may not be a correct assumption.

EIther way. I wouldn't ride it. Well, maybe with a g-suit and medics on hand. I'd probably black out in the first loop and not remember the rest of it, though.

Meanwhile in China...

AeroMechanical says...

To be fair, I'm not actually sure what the right move would be even with the outside perspective and unlimited time to think about it. Maybe the best thing is to keep it rolling, point it somewhere safe and jump. Maybe stop immediately (assuming the brakes still work) and run the hell away. Also, that's a pretty big, very hot looking, thick-black-smoke belching fire. The driver might already not be in a condition to do anything.

Red light encounter

AeroMechanical says...

Definitely. The guy was in a left-turn-only lane and cut into the right lane mid-intersection. On a motorcycle, in an eight lane intersection, that's just asking for it.

Yeah, the juggler was cool too. Whatever, get off my lawn.

"Red light encounter" could have meant a collision, but happily, it does not.

De-Icing 2.0

AeroMechanical says...

I wonder how this method compares to just spraying the liquid butane and whatever directly onto the ice. I suppose it's probably not good for the rubber and polymer parts, but then, neither is fire.
