YouTube Slowness?

Is it just me or is YouTube fucking up for anyone else? For about 3 days now, I have been having problems watching videos from YouTube. At first I thought my ISP was having a problems again, but running a speed test shows I'm still getting my full speed, I'm able to watch movies from Netflix in HD and I have no problems with videos from other sites.

It happens when watching embeds here or straight from YouTube. Some videos work fine, for example a 1-3 minute video might begin playing and fully load in seconds while a 30 second clip might play a few seconds and stop to wait for it to buffer. Long videos are more of a problem. They either stop playing a few seconds in and refuse to load more, or stop several minutes in before it decides to quit.

On YouTube I have the option "Always choose the best quality for my connection and player size" checked and to play HD when full screen (which it never does). It doesn't seem to matter what quality the video is anyway. It acts like I've lost connection. Reloading and skipping back to where it stopped doesn't work, it just refuses to play from wherever it stopped.

I've always been able to play 720p and 1080p on YouTube without problems, but it does it on the 360 and 480 streams too. I just watched a 2 hour movie in HD from Netflix without a hiccup while my niece was watching another Netflix movie on her tablet.

Been screwing up for awhile for me. I think it's based on video popularity and how recent that popularity is. Like it will stream things that are very popular no problem...the more eclectic stuff takes ages. Actually wrote a comment about it on a video here and got downvoted because I upvoted the video after I was only able to get about a quarter of it to buffer without issues.

Youtube embeds play slow for me too. They chunk along while loading. It's been like that for most videos for me since youtube updated the way that they stream their data a few months back.

Although most of them play OK for me, the way they work has changed. Before the change I used to turn off my wifi after, lets say, 1-2 minutes had loaded to avoid using up my bandwidth quota while it loaded the whole darned thing in the background... then I would watch the 1-2 minutes and decide whether to load the rest. If I try that now, as soon as I turn off wifi the whole thing just breaks, no matter how much it thinks it had loaded.

If your connection is the tiniest bit flakey, or under unusual load, this could break things for you that would not have broken with the old loading scheme.

You could consider putting in a bug report, perhaps they'll make the old scheme optional in settings, or just fix the new one?

Reloading the page, then moving the slider to where you were up to, will generally get it going again if it does break. The old trick of clicking the slider just past where it's up to doesn't work as often as it used to.
