I don't think downvoting is an appropriate response, though I feel your pain. Sometimes the only choice for some videos includes commercials. For example, I have a lot of music videos embedded from Yahoo, originally uploaded by Yahoo Music. This means that sometimes there will be pre-roll commercials with them. So why did I choose them? Mostly they weren't my first choices, but the originals from YouTube, MySpace, etc. were yanked because of DMCA bullshit. So then I used Yahoo embeds, because I know they probably won't go dead because the music labels are collecting royalties from the ad revenue generated by Yahoo.

It's a bit of a Faustian bargain when you post videos with ads in them. We all hate the ads, but then we all hate it when our videos go dead because of DMCA claims. So if you really hate them then just don't watch those videos, but please don't downvote them just because of that. Also, it makes baby Jesus cry.

I've downvoted everything I encountered that was blocked like Hulu before. It's pissed me off enough times that I don't feel bad about it.

Downvoting because of something in the video is not bad form in my book at all. It's your vote, do as you please. As long as it's not a complete blanket vote on everything in the Commercial channel or something. The least that's asked is that you see the videos, or see some of them.

You're right, brother schmawy - VS doesn't see a penny of revenue from commercials in videos. However VS does generate ad revenue through people coming here to watch videos, so it's not like we're getting completely screwed on the deal.

Tell you what, every time you see a video with a commercial in it, think about all the poor, starving children in the world who don't get to watch videos of any variety. Then ask yourself, "What the fuck is KP talking about?"

You can't have your cake and eat it too. If you want to watch quality (original) content without paying for it you should be able to settle with watching one ad before or after it.

I can agree with this - I mean, the youtube versions of Hulu clips is completely acceptable, in my book, but some of the embeds, like the CBS clip from 60 minutes had several commercials intersecting the video, which is just incredibly annoying. One of the reasons we're here is to avoid exactly that.

Avoid commercials yes, I'd venture further farther t0 include content-hogging sites with bling and load drag, embeds Dailyshow/ComedyCentral or Metacafe with the gratuitous bandwidth whoring entreat, "Continue to video"...extra clicking and speed hogging-Poo Poo on the future of constant bombardment of buy, try, fry or lie....

"'TV invents a disease you think you have..so you buy our drugs and soon you depend on them...fucks yer mind upp worse got yoiu feelin' helpless but yer commin'
back for more again and again..gonna RIP YOU OFF!"

If the commercial is in the video embed posted here then it must be considered part of the video, yes? If that's the case, shouldn't your aversion to commercials be taken into consideration? It's a part of the video, and since we're supposed to vote based on the video as a whole, it would only make sense to do it in this regard aswell.

The vote shouldn't necessarily have to take into consideration anything but the content and quality of the video. So whether or not some hosting site needs revenue streams or whatever is irrelevant to the vote itself. Looking at it from that perspective, it's basically the same reasoning as with the downvoting on blocked videos. All the blocked people can see is a black screen, and that's neither fun nor interesting to watch.

I've had this debate in my head before. It's one thing when you've got a 15-30 minute TED talk with a commercial in it; they're usually at the end but I wouldn't complain if they were at the beginning; and it's another thing entirely when it's 2 minutes of nutshots and kitties preceded by a 30 second commercial.

I don't think I've ever downvoted due to a commercial, but I know I've been tempted. I generally don't do so because I know that's not the content that the sifter is trying to present to us. If I really felt like a video was destroyed by the commercials, then I'd probably go ahead and downvote, but not if they're just annoying.

I'll second what kronos said in his first post. I submit mostly music videos and it's becoming harder and harder to find a source without an ad before it. Plus, all the YouTube, commercial-free ones are dropping like flies because of copyright claims.

I hate them as much as you and have looked at every option for an ad-free version, but sometimes it's just not possible. I usually opt for Yahoo over Daily Motion because Yahoo shows a 30-second ad, but only every few times you watch a video, while DM plays a 15-second ad every single time. In the end, a 30- or 15-second ad won't kill you... just mute it, stare at the ceiling, and think about butterflies and lollipops for a while.

Also agree with eric. Downvote if you want to. They shouldn't be taken so seriously and are up to your discretion.

I thank everyone for their considered opinions. For now I think I will not change my current policy of withholding vote or minimizing videos with ads frontloaded and voting for those with ads at the end (usually I vote sometime in the middle anyway damn the rules). As an added measure of good faith I might even give tailed ads my precious attention.

I propose a moment of silent rememberance for the days when ther were no ads, for we stand on the cusp of permanent change.

Aye, cherish those days. They are slowly but surely dwindling. Before you know it, ads will be a commonplace thing. They might be slow to catch up, but eventually they'll sneak their way in permanently.
