State of the Sift '08

I've come to think of this place as the Wikipedia of videos -- one entry per video, kept current and annotated with comments. That's quite a responsibility for Sifters to bear, but the community has shown itself to be more than capable of developing standards and sticking to them.

What's Quality and what's not?

Getting down to business, there have been some major changes in the operation of VideoSift lately. It seems like a good time to sound off on them. There hasn't been much chatter recently, so I'll hazard a guess that people are fairly satisfied with the current queue system.

To follow up on my recent post about building the community using existing tools, are there any more structural changes that you'd you like to see to keep up the Quality standards of the Sift? I've seen some good ideas buried in past posts, so feel free to paste them here.

1. I say * begs should be free, but can only be done once every 3 days. I think Power points should be used to promote the videos of others or to award * quality stars in order to build community spirit.

2. Add a few more preferred hosts so that members who haven't reached Gold can have more variety to choose from. Here are my proposed candidates:

- Funny or Die
- Superdeluxe
- Megavideo
- Red Lasso
- Megavideo
- Jib Jab
- 5 Min. Life
- Hulu

3. Raise the maximum number of channel assignments a video can have from 5 to 6. We've added 5 new channels in the past couple of months, and more will be popping up soon. Six shall be the number, and the number shall be six.

4. Create a Gold Diamond level for reaching a thousand, as we have two members who are rapidly approaching 1000 stars. Their privilege: Give them an extra queue slot for reaching that level. If they've contributed that much to the Sift then they've earned that extra queue slot.

5. Give Silver Diamonds a privilege, because they currently don't have anything more than Bronze Diamonds. Think of something good, like a free pedicure.

It was kind of disappointing that the star point requirement for creating a channel increases before I reach it. It used to be 50 to make a collective, now it's 250 to make a channel, although half the channel owners are grandfathered in under the old policy and still have less than 250.

No gold diamonds! Four-leaf clovers or crowns are better.

I like 2,3,4,5 from kp's post, don't particularly care about 1 yet. As a bronze, all I can do with my power point is beg, and I usually don't even do that - I only beg the stuff that I think just didn't get seen enough the first time around, not the stuff that I am probably the only person weird enough to like.

Though I imagine when I hit gold I'll be handing out * quality like a $5 hooker, and I've got a big ol' list of stuff to promote when I hit gold 100...

It's probably for the better that promote and beg share a cooldown, else you could have X videos promoted as well as X videos begging at the same time, and people don't want to see too much old stuff. They want new, new, new!

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Some really good ideas here. We are due for an addition to our video hosts list- that's something we're already working on.

The problem of making * beg a free-for-all, is that that Beggar's Corner then becomes diluted, even once a 3-day would be too much I suspect.

“We the people, in order to form a more perfect video website”

Two hundred and twenty one years ago, in a server that still stands across the street, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launched the internets improbable experiment in video democracy. Farmers and scholars; statesmen and geeks who had traveled across an ocean of crap to escape LOLcats, kicks in the nuts, Mr. Pregnant and Chris Crocker finally made real their declaration of video independence at a Philadelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787.

The site they produced was eventually launched but ultimately unfinished...

Oh and while we are at suggestions:
I´d still love to have the "validate embed code" button always accessible as a quick way to check for dupes. That can´t be so hard to include somewhere, can it?

Instead of new additions to the site, can we get things fixed that aren't working properly first?

  • In the queue, viewed videos do not remain hidden despite having that option checked.
  • Unique views are not always counted properly.
  • "Hide your name from current usage lists" does not hide names in the "Current Users" list
  • It's currently possible to post non-Flash videos.
Anyone know of others I'm not aware of or remembering at the moment?

real life videosift convention at the expense of siftbot at a designated location to be announced later. Gold stars and up (and BillOReilly) are invited, bronze diamonds get paid roundtrip flight tickets, silver diamonds get full paid trip including room and board.

KP must like Megavideo so much that he wrote it twice.

Ha ha. Very funny. Why don't YOU try writing an error-free comment while being serviced by three Playboy centerfolds.
And then tell me all about it, pretty please.

Cutting holes in three separate playboy centerfolds and then stacking them onto your tube-steak, does not count as "being serviced by three Playboy centerfolds".

(although I need to know your trick of reducing the papercuts, these things sting)

It's only a click away; do we need to crowd the screen any more?

It is perfectly fine where it is!!!
You just can´t access the feature with a full queue, thats what I miss...

Hex says...

Change the queue slots to one slot per user. There is too much crap going through and too much good stuff gets lost simply because there are too many videos going through here.

I have to beg always because my posts are too damn obscure.

Ya, I've noticed that it's hard to get stuff sifted lately. I've posted a couple videos that I thought were great that never got sifted. Maybe I'm wrong about them, but there have been a few other videos that other members have posted that seemed terrific that never got out of sift. Seems like I have to beg to get anything sifted. I also agree that beg can be used a bit too frequently, because it seems like almost every video in the beggar's corner gets sifted.
