Retroactive Comment Editing

We've changed comments to make it so you can only make modifications in the first hour 24 hours after submission. It's a small change but a necessary one (anyone remember SnakePlissken?), so if you go looking for the edit link and it's not there, you know why.

I can't say I feel strongly either way, but on balance, I think it's probably a bad idea. Many comments are edited due to new information, correcting erroneous information, or redacting personal information, among other things. I get what you're saying about foresight, but I think holding users to a binding policy like that may cause more problems than it will solve. Which begs the question - has there been a rash of edited comments recently that has caused problems? Why do this now?

Also, this may be very confusing for new users down the road, who don't see this post, and naturally assume that the 'edit' functionality is not time restricted.

I hate to invoke the "most sites" defense (if mosts sites jumped off a cliff ...) but most sites don't allow for eternal retroactive comment editing - and there are valid reasons for this.

For one, it can mess up the flow of a thread that others have responded to down-stream and sew confusion all around.

Is it unreasonable to require, that we as members, commit to our verbage at some point?

I wonder how it would effect users like Pinky who share personal information one night and then realize that they shared too much the next day?

In such extreme circumstances, one could just ask an admin to modify their comment for them.

Fear being the mind-killer, memories of plissken, memories of a once-mediocre set of parameters, ending with pathetic crescendo, of we have to rob, steal, beg, or fuck art in it's ass, to assure that we keep the Jew's gold......

Fucking Jews, fucking Nazis.....Now that'd make a great snuff film......

Pathetic
Weak
Twisted
and Fucked.......

I regret this, then edited it within 24 hours, but after this I couldn't edit it when I regret that too.

Crap.

Let it live forever on the intarnets and provoke more undue negative emotions.

Edit: You should have seen what I had written before I edited this comment.

Sifters, who post under the influence, will have to be more careful.

man, I'm always under the influence
but, srsly, the snake plissken story must be told now that you gave us a taste of it - come on, oldtimers, we want a story!!

lucky760 says...

Okay- The community has spoken. We told SiftBot what you guys said. He grumbled a little and told me to leave him alone, but I think we can convince him to allow comment editing for 24 hours after submission.

Speaking-
This is not how it has always been-0why lose a feature that affords access to the contributor-not so much the editing feature-the goddamn history of our entire trek!!

Choggie - I would call this "attention seeking behaviour" - while it may be fun to watch from the sidelines this kind of stuff hurts the sift. Please chill out or sleep it off - whichever remedy applies best. Thanks

choggie says...

Honored to be reckoned as such, never knew the man-Left periods, innit???
Who IS/WAS this man snakeplissken????....Tell us more, please-Seems someone has an opinion based in hard fact......

SG knows, axe her.......

joemawlma says...

this is what happens when a site gets too popular. creators abandon their most loyal early adopters because of a stupid disagreement. it's not like losing a few members will hurt your ad revenue bottom line. follow in digg's footsteps; that's what you've been trying to do since the beginning. and doing a fine job of it.

it's draconian to take away our ability to change or alter our own comments. and as far as the "breaking the comment flow" goes, people should be quoting the person they're speaking to when they respond in the first place. then it won't matter if a previous comment is taken away. reddit does it with the ">" symbol. pretty simple really.

oh well, time to move on for me anyway. i'll probably be banned for voicing my opinion too.

gwiz665 says...

You don't like it, gtfo.

Why do you want the ability? For the principle of the thing? To be able to duck and cover, and erase all your steps here? Then DON'T POST.

Quotes can be changed anyway, look:

>> ^joemawlma:
Waah waah waaah, freedom of speech, waah waah waah, draconian, waaaah

It's not like we don't have any say in the matter, we did get it changed to 24hours before lockdown.
