I just saw the film. As usual, all this stuff is blown out of proportion -- yes, the word "retard" is used many times in the film. But it's never used in a way that's meant to be hurtful, and all the characters saying it aren't exactly the smartest guys around. Plus -- I won't give anything away, but Robert Downey Jr. has a speech about the intricacies of playing a "retard" that's worth the price of admission alone. I'll probably be sifting it around when the DVD comes out, because I'm sure that part will pop up on Youtube at some point.

Those retards are being so fucking retarded; the whole retarded mess is totally retarded. Oh shit! The house is on fire! Somebody get the fire extinguisher! Oh no! The baby is in there, and he's on fire! Oh shit! His clothing isn't flame-Down Syndromed! AHHHHHHHHH!

The real "Rainman", Kim Peek, is an idiot savant who is mentally retarded, yet he can remember everything he's ever learned, and can immediately give you an answer to any question. Do you think he cares that he's both an idiot and a retard?

^Being an idiot savant does make one an idiot.

Idiot: "An utterly foolish or senseless person"

Idiot savant: "a mentally defective person with an exceptional skill or talent in a special field, as a highly developed ability to play music or to solve complex mathematical problems mentally at great speed."

I know, but I was simply mentioning that the term for his ability has a negative word in it. a bit comical, if you ask me.
