Google Video has a new feature called video ranking that shows the top 100 popular videos. Google Video still doesn't show public statistics for videos, like YouTube, but this is a good start. Google Video Top 100 feels exactly like an MTV Countdown: you have today's position, yesterday's ranking, a thumbnail, a short description of the video and the link to the video.

Currently, the most popular video is a Carlsberg ad for this summer’s Football World Cup: Probably Greatest Pub Team in World, in which Bobby Robson manages a pub football team filled with former England legends, including Bobby Charlton, Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle.

This is definitely a good start, I would love to see more stats from google. I do however notice that they are already running into the issue that seems to plague YouTube, Myspace, and the web in general. The "cam girl / random underage ho" effect. I notice that quite a few of their videos are based around scantily clad ladies gyrating and or otherwise debasing themselves.

I wonder how many visitors we would need a day to have a massive impact on that list, I notice quite a few videos that have had relatively decent runs on videosift as well as some that were snubbed for lacking quality.

Interesting. I think though when you take the human element out of rankings you lose something. I mean I know there is a human element, rating by views - but it's so crude and objective that it's not a very good judge of quality.

Of course, I might be slightly prejudiced with regard to video ranking methods.

They must be measuring views. If you look at the same top four via blog link references you get a very different picture...
