Cars nostalgia

Just remembering all the shitty little cars I've driven through the years.
Since I grew up in socialist Yugoslavia, you'll probably laugh as hell when I tell you my first car was the best of them all - the small and robust Zastava 750 (nicknamed "fičo"), based on a very succesful Fiat 600 "Seicento" and produced in Yugoslavia under license from 1965 by the car division of serbian "Crvena Zastava" company, the same guys that spawned the legendary Yugo.

I drove a lot of different cars, always switching from one piece of junk to the next. My Zastava 750 was already 13 years old when I got it so after I fucked it up beyond repair I bought a 1988 Renault 4, made by slovenian Revoz under french license.

They were just out of production then and I later bought another 2 wrecked ones just for the spare parts. Finaly I gave up on the old "quatrelle" (or "katrca" as was known in Slovenia) when my girlfriend crashed it to pieces.

Instead I bought a 1990 Renault 5 from my stepsister who already fucked it up and which I then drove for about a year and a half (god knows only my willpower held that thing together), crashed it twice, patched it up, then sold it and downgraded to another Renault 4.

Few months later I bought a 1991 german Opel Kaddett, perfectly preserved. Too bad a buddy of mine crashed it only two months later. A good, reliable car (unlike the friend i loaned it to).

I downgraded again to another yugo piece of junk, Zastava 101 (mine was made in 1980).

Next up was 1993 Opel Vectra 1.6, big & heavy mother. No luck with this one either. Some madman came speeding into me head on, almost killing us both.

There were some other cars I drove, can't remember all of them, but some of them were even worse than Zastava (you've probably heard of Lada?)

I now ride a bycicle... How about you?

I've had two 1991 Ford Tempos, both of which died horrible deaths. I bought the first one because it was my first car and I didn't know any better. I'm not quite sure why I bought the second one, as the first one should have taught me a lesson.

In between those two I had a 1990 Geo Metro, but it was a great car. I filled up the tank for about ten dollars and drove it forever.

I haven't had a car for five years, and I had great timing, since I stopped driving at the onset of the invasion of Iraq. When I stopped driving, gas here was 99 cents per gallon, and now it's over four dollars.

My first car was a 1993 Mitsubishi Galant S. Great car got amazing gas mileage. Went as far as I could with it but eventually at 287,000 miles the repairs it needed to keep it going outweighed the cost of a new car.

The second car I still own. a 1998 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. It's run like a beauty since the day I got it. The all wheel drive saved myself from accidents several times. Doesn't get as good mileage as my first car but the low maintaince cost and safety make up for it.

Third car we are currently trying to sell is a 1997 Ford Escort ES. Amazing thing about this car is it's 'new car' smell hasn't faded, it's in great shape, low miles, but hard to keep up with the repairs and doesn't handle ice very well. After our son was born we haven't used it so it's just an extra insurance liability we don't need.

My first car was Daisy May. She was a beauty of a 1987 Volvo 240 GL (Mine was blue). I had that while I was in high school, and sold it for parts (266,000 miles) when I went into the Marine Corps.

When I was in the Marines, I bought a green '96 Explorer. Shitty on gas, but it wasn't that big of a deal, because it was cheap enough. While I had that one, I picked up an '05 Malibu for my now ex-wife. Don't. Ever. Buy. A. Malibu. It's not that it was a piece of shit. I never had to get any work done. It just didn't hold any value and was a very booooorrrrriinnnnggg car.

Then we split, she took the Exploder (because it was worth less) and I splurged on my new baby.
I traded the Malibu in for a 2004 Volvo S60 2.5T.
I LOVE this car. They payments hurt, but overall, it's worth it. I have 250 ft-lbs of torque and 208 HP from my 5 cylinder 2.5 L engine, so it's plenty fast, but because of the in0line, I also get great mileage (~22 city 30 hwy)

It's luxurious, has plenty of bells and whistles, and it sure is a looker. I love this car.

My first car was a 1993 Saturn SL1, which I loved dearly...right up 'till I totaled it in a snowstorm.

Then I moved on up *cough* to a 1989 Ford Escort Wagon. No air conditioning, no power anything, and a wonderful AM/FM radio. Went well with the ramen noodles I was subsisting on at the time, too.

Eventually I managed to talk my dad into letting me have his 1991 Integra in 1998, rather than trade it in for the peanuts they were offering him at dealerships. I only just got rid of that car last year. It was quite the warhorse -- sold it with 180,000 miles, and though it did have quite a few serious repairs around 120,000 miles, it was still running fine.
