A possible idea to make *beg work better
So I think it's pretty much an accepted fact at this point that the Beggar's Canyon is essentially useless. The best you can generally hope for by *begging a video is one vote, and that's if you get lucky.
I propose that we get rid of the Beggar's Canyon altogether, and instead make invoking *beg on a video put it back in the unsifted queue, kind of like the *requeue command from the days of yore. You could limit it to having each member only allowed one *begged video at a time, to prevent people from flooding the queue with their old PQed vids.

Sure.
I like this idea (look at my PQ and it's no wonder). I seem to recall that this or something similar was floated a couple years ago, and it was shot down for some reason and begging was the compromise. I may be misremembering though.
Or you could just accept that people don't like your video.

What about when you just happen to submit your video at a bad hour, so that it only gets 4 unique views before it expires?
Title it better next time.
Beggar's canyon would work if it were treated as fulfilling others desires over their own or according to some ambiguous framework whose original intent was to offer the best of the internet video offerings. When I go there, I consider first that users used earned points to beg it......they used the invocation because the vid spoke to them in a profound way-
Similarly, if people would take the time to visit the dead pool and earn points by fixing embeds, the number of dead vids would decrease rapidly AND you get points for the fix.
Try changing your titles over and over again...I have conducted the same experiment time and again, with predictable results. The tone, title, and tags are what monkeys respond to, seldom facts or fancy.
I find it amusing that so many people here who would try to distinguish their politics or world view over that of others they deem or label "conservative" or "deluded", look exactly like those they accuse with those convenient, meaningless labels....you all look alike to me.
Well...beggars canyon is useless if nobody uses it. It's a working self fulfilling prophecy. If more people believe it's relevant then it's relevant.
I'm going to go out of my way to keep and make it relevant.
Perhaps Beggar's Canyon itself needs to be revamped. There needs to be a compelling reason for people to go there. Perhaps involving the new badge rewards? People seem to react well to the game-like scoring system of the Sift. Perhaps 2 or 3 vids from the Canyon could get placed by default on the front page alongside the Top vids to show them a little love? Like a "Hard Luck Spotlight" or something, off the top of my head. I do agree though, I've had a bunch of stuff wallow in obscurity and go through the Canyon 4 or 5 times, just to have it immediately jump another 15 when it finally does get Sifted.
Imo the best thing to help beggars canyon is to remove it from the 'unsifted' submenu and let it have a main spot between 'Comments' and 'Playlists'. Or better yet, between 'Unsifted' and 'Comments'. It's just not visible enough. Out of sight, out of mind.
Actually I think "submit video" should be removed from 'unsifted' as well. It's really not intuitive to go to the unsifted video section to submit a new video. There should be a clear button to "SUBMIT A SIFT" just like there are "UPLOAD" buttons displayed predominantly on most major video sites.
