I agree with Ant. How about making the winner of the poll the default and adding an option in our account preferences to switch it to the other one.

id' say the current one + a promoted-videos tab so a promote isnt totally useless when it gets bumped out. (or some other way of making the promote worthwile)

or maybe make a little button underneath that skips to the next 5 promotes so you can have like 25 promotes on the frontpage and skip through them and/or a button that goes to a special promoted-videos page

I like how the new promote looks visually, but don't like that it takes me off the main page. Is there anyway to view and vote on promoted vids directly from the main page? Maybe when you click on the vids, they would expand and the vote buttons would magically appear?

If people can choose to switch to the current "ad banner" style view then you wind up with the same problem those (like me) were griping about when this change took place. People are not noticing the promotes in the banner. Promotes are just not worth doing right now. They don't work. It is not that hard to scroll by a bunch of the old style promotes if you're not interested in them.

I wish the poll were up longer than 24 hours though so everyone could get their vote in.

The current system simply doesn't work. I got 2 of my videos promoted and both of them are gold, they haven't received a single new upvote at all. This is not in accordance with previous promotes.

If I promote a video, does it drop off the "Hotness" listing if it was there in the first place? Because I don't want that, regardless of what system we use.

Hotness is based on views to vote ratio no?

^yes but also newness, so an old promoted video would not show up.

I really like the new layout, now that I'm used to it. I used to just scroll past the old-style promotes, to be honest, whereas I've spotted some real gems in the new format. I may have different habits from most, of course.... It would just be nice if there was a tiny little vote display next to each one.

And of course, if Lucky is sitting around looking for something to do, it would be great to have them expand AJAXily like the main listings do.

I like the way it's presented now, but I don't like that we're limited to one row.

If we allowed it to grow more rows, but not hang there forever - so that they were in the promoted box in the same period of time as the old way, that would be ideal to me.

You might even make the box only be 2 videos wide, so they are more prominent and in your face.

I see what the goals were with this change but it's such a severe break with the previous format that we've lost too much. I doublepromoted a video from Farhad and I don't think it got a vote while it was up there. It's now got two extra votes. My previous promotes also died quickly.

For me the promotes are very important, they allow me to help sift good stuff and bring interesting material to the attention of those who missed them the first time around.

I'm not sure what the overall stats say but there must be some way of doing an a/b comparison and seeing the difference in votes cast after promotes. Personally I don't click on the promoted videos as much, it's too unfriendly to lose my current tab or have to open a new one.

I think I previously suggested that you limit the number of promoted videos appearing at any one time and establish a queue. That feels like a reasonable solution to a problem that was never that serious in the first place in my opinion.

I say good choice - in mere minutes my promote got 3 votes - way better this way. A "promote queue" if it's not too much of a hassle for Lucky to code - could be a smart compromise though (your vid will appear as a promote in X minutes whatever). Wonder if it'd be a big challenge?

I just wanted to say a very, very honest and genuine thank you to dag for this poll and to everybody who voted.

As some will remember I took a vehement stand against the then-new order; truth be told, it was to the point that I privately doubted I would ever make it to a Gold100 as the power to * promote had all but completely lost any appeal it had held in my eyes.

So again, thank you dag for reinvigorating my willingness to Sift and be a part of this great(-est?) web community
