Zero Punctuation: Mass Effect 2

Yahtzee takes on Mass Effect 2.

At least the writing's good!
Croccydilesays...

So after last weeks post should we talk about Borderlands now? (I kiiiiiid! Shit, wait he referenced it in the review anyways)

I was hoping he was going to notice the rash of conveniently placed chest high walls scattered throughout any battle scene after giving Gears of War the same berating.

I love how much he taunts Bioware about vehicle sections. I disagree about Bioware == good writing, I mean he did play Dragon Age didn't he? It's more accurate to say Bioware == a good writer or two, and they can only work on one game at a time.

We love his feedback. I am currently starting an internal campaign to have 3 guys dedicated to the Jetpack and Laser Wolves planet for ME3 starting right now.

Considering the other trivia-based jokes in the ME2, I'm sure there will be at least a mention.

How many people found the The Pirates of Penzance skit?

I didn't know about the savegame thing, so I completely deleted ME1 save when I was done. If you don't have a savegame you are given default ME1 decisions in 2, which sucks because they were mostly shit decisions. Would have been nice if they gave the players without a savegame an option to say how they reacted to the big events of ME1.

I was pretty critical of the game because they simplified the RPG elements so much, but I am enjoying it. The writing is good as said, but there is hardly a real story, it's mostly about assembling a team, and finding out that most of your old team mates are too busy to save the universe.

Yahtzee can't really critique the difficulty if he hasn't played it on the harder setting, where you do have to be quite tactical.

The mineral scanning is the worst part of the game, the planets and their descriptions are nice, but the scanning is just so extremely boring and monotonous. I really preferred the vehicle sections.

You have revealed you didn't play as a "jerk" in #1 then...

Sometimes I was a jerk, I played rather neutral. Which is another thing Yahtzee rightly complains about, you are only rewarded if you play renegade jerk or pure paragon, which kind of goes against the idea of role playing.

BoneyDsays...

I've so far found the renegade playthrough in ME2 to have a bit of a different flavour. It seems like it's less of just playing the dickhead and more the sinister malcontent. You can do some really anus things at times... like if you actually give the evidence at Tali's trial (i.e. the non-paragon/renegade option). Of course, there are downsides to picking that, but it's still a valid 'evil character' option as it most-assuredly sends the Quarians to war.

I know that's a cherry picked example and I although I do still side with Yahtzee, the game is very well written for a mainstream title. Certainly better than 94.2% of Hollywood movies, IMHO. It just probably shouldn't be cast in to that 'RPG mould', since it - like ME1 definitely aspired to be also - is more of a RP-Shooter.
