Zero Punctuation: Gears of War 2

This week Zero Punctuation reviews Gears of War 2, but only for all you big manly men.

I was also wondering why this monstrous, vicious, evil race hell bent on destroying humanity had the most beautifully intricate, delicate, ornate carved decor on its architecture.

YAY! They skipped Unskippable!

I have so been looking forward to this review. I've heard tons of people saying, "it's PERFECT", but we all know console shooters can't POSSIBLY be perfect or good.

Everything about this video was pretty hilarious and dead on. You could tell he was having a hard time finding things to bicker about, but really, that's because anyone who's played either GoW knows what to expect of the sequel. Yahtzee said it perfectly- the developers played it safe because of the crowd that the game attracts are fine with that. Anything experimental would've blown up in their face, and with something so mainstream, you really don't want to take the gamble.

On the comedy side, it was pretty funny. I agree with the previous comments, "It was supposed to be a South African accent, ok?" was the funniest part. I guess we weren't the only ones confused by two accents at the same time.

Is anyone else sick and tired of the forced artificial 'cover' system dropped into every single console shooter these days? (Mind I'm a PC gamer but I do play console to pc 'ports'.)

Yahtzee appears to be getting tired of it as well. Every game from Halo to GoW to Mass Effect throws in these waist-high walls in the middle of roads, paths, even indoors to give the players cover. It's fake, it's boring and it's old hat. I much prefer shooters that take advantage of true collision detection for their cover. Like FarCry 2, where cover consists of things you would use for cover in real life, like trees. In FC2 if I'm injured I duck behind a tree in hopes of gaining cover for a few seconds so I can put my elbow back in place, instead of ducking behind a low concrete wall in the middle of an office hallway to regenerate ala GoW.

Am I alone in this?

Xaielao- You're absolutely right. I really liked the cover system in Grand Theft Auto 4. Sure, just like any other magnet-cover system, you cover behind the wrong wall here and there, but everything you cover with is realistic, and if you're too big for it to cover all of you, you'll have vulnerable areas you could be shot at, etc.

Lodurr- I was thinking the same thing. It seems like every shooter these days has that one level.

I believe this is the work of Kudo Tsunoda, who is also responsible for such utter crap as the defjam series.

I used to work with Kudo back in his days at 3DO (actually work for him would be a more appropriate description). He's actually a great guy in real life and one of the few really good managers I knew in the video game industry. He always tried to protect his team and do what he thought was best for the game. Not that his ideas were always correct or anything. But he was always willing to listen to those who disagreed with him and he seemed to genuinely care about the people who worked under him. For that, he earned the team's loyalty and respect.

I haven't played GoW2, but I suspect that it's unfair to lay the blame on any of the game's deficiencies on a single person. Rarely does any one person have that much control over a game's development. Even CliffyB has a boss to answer to.
