sowatsurpointdude! Good to see you :-)

Are you from the U.S.? It would explain why you didn't get the "football" tag. It seems about everyone else in the world but we Americans call it football. Makes sense when ya think about it.

That got me wondering, if everybody but the Americans call it "football", "futbol", or some derivitive thereof, why do Americans call it "soccer"? That's not even remotely close!

Well, Google Answers had this to say. I cherry-picked the explanation I like the most:

Soccer is an abbreviation for "Association Football". The Football Association was formed in London in October 1863 when representatives of eleven clubs and schools met in an attempt to standardize the rules of the game. One of the rules prohibited the carrying of the ball, a rule that would lead to the Rugby-oriented clubs leaving the Association several months later. The name Association Football was coined to distinguish it from Rugby.

By 1889, the abbreviation socca' was in use, and the spelling soccer had made its appearance by 1895."

Very snazzy, oohahh. Learn something new every day.

I always wondered, actually, why they call American Football "football". After all, it's really only the punter who uses his foot. The rest of the guys just carry the damn ball around. It's more like "homoerotic catch".
