LaRouche supporter "assaulted" at Alaska State Fair

What do YOU think?
marinarasays...

no doubt if the guy was passing out coupons for at&t.com he would have been left alone.
civil rights get trampled by anyone these days, even rent-a-cops.

people hate larouche because he makes sense. 100 times more sense than the mainstream narrative.

HugeJerksays...

Looked like he was inside an event area... I'm not positive, but I think the organizers have the right to remove whoever they want. Since this guy was causing a disturbance, he was removed. Is there anything more on this, like if they actually arrested and booked him?

marinarasays...

looks like he protested at the wrong fair.

Sidney Hill is in jail awaiting a pre-trial at 1:00pm on August 27, 2010 at the Palmer Courthouse. He has been charged with Assault 4-Cause Fear Of Injury,
Disorderly Conduct-Challenge To Fight, and Criminal Trespass 2- Upon Premises.

HugeJerksays...

Yikes, that seems extreme.

I'm fine with removing protesters or drunks who are disruptive when they are inside the perimeter of an event (it has happened to friends of mine at a street fair), but I think he should have just been released at the nearest street and warned he'd be arrested for disturbing the peace or trespass if he returned.>> ^marinara:

Personally, I think this guy can *promote whatever he wants to. Just keep it out of my state fair!!! I'm there for fun. Thanks to this looney a bunch of kids get to see a protester taken down at a fun event. Think ahead. Choose the correct platform.

dystopianfuturetodaysays...

The LaRouche movement used to set up tables outside of the Trader Joe's I used to frequent, but they were smart enough to set up on the street and not inside the actual business. Free speech doesn't give you the right to trespass on private property or disrupt ticketed events.

Dunno, doesn't the fact that anyone is welcome to a state fair mean that anyone's crazy ideas are as well? Having people wondering around practicing free speech in a way that is annoying shouldn't have an impact on his ability to practice it. Freedom causes a lot of unpleasantness, like people cursing in front of your kids or something, but we have to put up with those small inconveniences in the name of a greater virtue than comfort.

It was hard for me to understand, were those policemen or just security guards. Why was he touched, was he under arrest?

shagen454says...

He should be able to whatever the fuck he wants. LaRouche is a piece of shit lunatic but still. I remember seeing these guys on 16th Street / Mission with a banner of Obama with a nazi mustache and I almost said something but then I thought about all the bouncers, BART cops, Berkeley academics, bums, crackheads, crusty punks, drunks, junkies, bike "hipsters", prostitutes, gigolos and legitimately angered citizens and mamasitas they were going to have to deal with all day long; instantly felt better and just walked on by without a glance. And all of those people know much more about the world than LaRouche.

Is this state fair funded and operated by the state or private individuals? It matters.

If this was a private event, then he was trespassing when they asked him to leave and he cited his right to free speech. If this was a public event (meaning it's funded and operated by the state or city using tax revenue), then he has a right to be there and protest as long as he's not violent or causing an unreasonable disturbance. Right?

Douchebags with signs yelling about how they feel never get anywhere in life. Those kinds of actions are usually always disruptive and rarely "peaceably" assembling.

The 1st amendment doesn't state that you can say anything that you want whenever you want under any conditions.

If his conduct before his initial encounter with security was similar to his conduct after (during the video), considering the time and place, it could very easily be considered disorderly and inappropriate.

Creaturesays...

Oh yes, the La Rouchebags. When Bush was in office, Bush had a Hitler stash and they were all anti-war. Now that it's Obama, Obama has a Hitler stash and health care reform is secretly about killing your grandparents. When I was much younger (and dumber) I asked one about their organization. I was given some pamphlets about how La Rouche is all knowing, and invited to a "spiritual" retreat on an island....Something seems 'off' to me

There's a fine line between free speech and screaming at people/flipping out when being asked to leave private property. Sorry, but that guy had a better case for his freedom of speech being violated before he started screaming in people's faces, and yelling insults at anyone that wanted him to quiet down.

The whole chubby cop pinning down a man with crutches was pretty cringe worthy though....

Those are pretty pansy charges BTW. Basically yelling insults at people, refusing to leave private property, and screaming about something violent. The video could work against him, at least as far as the Assault 4, and trespass goes.

lol. Yeah, he seems like such a level-headed guy.

This protester was hog tackled (quite literally) because he was disturbing the peace. If he hadn't started screaming shit he probably would have been fine. Some rent-a-cops tackling a silent, peaceful demonstrator would have been much more interesting.

IAmTheBlurrsays...

I say that if you need to scream "1st Amendment! Freedom of Speech" and all that jazz when you think you're being persecuted, you've probably got your face on backwards.

People who yell those things like they're magic words just don't understand the text.

I don't know enough about law to make an informed decision on this one. But I did get this from the alaskan state fair website:

Press Release:
Regarding the incident on the Alaska State Fair Fairgrounds 26 August 2010
Friday, August 27, 2010 at 9:50pm

Our concern is first and foremost the safety of our fairgoers, the families with their children who should be able to enjoy the fair without disturbance or potential danger.

We are in touch with the company with whom we have a contract for fair security to review what transpired. We are also in touch with the Palmer Police on this matter.

Because the fairgrounds is on private property, we reserve the right to remove someone from the premises who is creating a disruption or may pose a threat to the safety of others.

We welcome diverse viewpoints and have a structure in place at the Alaska State Fair that allows for peaceful discord and exchange at our vendor and organization booth area.

GDGDsays...

If the event was in a public area, that is too bad for the event holders.

Freedom of speech should have prevailed.

I disagree with the gentlemen's thoughts on Obama though.

I am going to speak about the commentor here, not you Tym. I am really annoyed with lame-o's like this punk.

Why do people state irrelavent information? They say it to stir up silly bullshit. "We reserve the right to remove someone from the premises who is creating a disruption..." Good, they can stop right there. Everything else is propaganda lame-o shit. "or may pose a threat to the safety of others." You think so? Is that just because you own the property? I thought, dickmunch, that "danger" would be for the public too...but by your statement, you imply anyone can be dangerous anywhere that is not private property...

The protestor was little danger, and the guy or girl issuing the statement needs to stop adding bullshit and stfu.
