Grouper Eates Lionfish

This video is believed to be the first photo documentation of a grouper making an open water kill of an invasive lionfish without encouragement of any kind by a diver. Footage by Jim Hart, co-founder and executive director of Lionfish University.

Lionfish are in invasive species rarely eaten by anything, since they have long, sharp, poisoned spikes in near every direction. It seemed the grouper had experience with that, as it was quite careful to only attack from the rear and avoid the spines.

The grouper learning how to eat it gives me hope that the Caribbean may survive the invasion.
