English girl immitating an American Accent

I watch a lot of BBC, and half the time when they have an "American" it is someone who sounds like this.

From Neatorama:

Ever wonder how the rest of the world view Americans and our accent? Here’s an English girl named Joanna Grace recording a short video clip of herself talking as an American.

Sounded Californian to me.

I once met another English speaker from Australia I think (might have been Scotland) and he said that he confused accents as well, that an American accent sounded like a variation of Australian to him.

America has several distinct accents. Some of them really grate at my ears (Texas especially).

LOL, <sarcasm> yeah because those two accents sound so alike </sarcasm>

I thought her American accent was pretty bloody decent actually. True there's many different accents in the U.S. but don't you guys also have a "common" one that news readers and actors and that use so they're easier to understand no matter where you're watching from? At least that's what I guy I used to work with (who was born and raised in the States) said.

Yeah, I love accents as well. And, yeah, she's really not bad actually. She had a couple moments where she sounded a bit Canadian with her "o"'s, but other than that...she sounded like your typical American teen girl.

And, yeah faceman, in my mind, we do have one "common" accent that the majority of Americans grow up with, whereas every other American accent is generally regional, like the Southern/Texas accent, or New York accent. But yeah, many actors and news anchors tend to try to lose any regional accents they might grow up with, as some people tend to either find them annoying (see rougy above) or look at people that use them as less educated than those that use the "common" accent.

The thing about the "Texas" accent is it's not always in Texas. People from Alaska talk like that, people from Arkansas talk like that, people in sunny San Diego, California that have never even been to Texas talk like that. That accent is more attributed to a shit-kickin' redneck than to a Texan

From Georgia here - I think I only heard three words that didn't sound "normal" to me, so yeah, she did a pretty good job! And yes Faceman, there is a standard accent that is used by newscasters. I made a conscious effort growing up to not get a Southern accent so unless I'm around my family from Alabama, I speak with a standard one.

There's nothing wrong with southern accents, and there are several distinct variations of those.

It's not really the Texan accent that bothers me as much as it is the ignorance that I so often hear with that accent.

i think texas accent is sexy.
I don't like the california pitch thing where every sentence is a question, and sometimes you pause mid-sentence and the pitch goes up like theres a question there as well. that just sounds to me like you think your conversation partner is too thick-headed to understand you, so you have to stop and make sure they have understood what you are saying.

SO true swampgirl.. there are very few americans who do decent british accents.. trying to think now.. first ones that spring to mind are depp and zelwegger - she's pretty good to be fair.. there are others, those are the first ones i think of

(i know quite a lot of americans via online gaming, their english accent is horrific)

Now I feel like a jerk.

Hey! Some of my best friends are Texans! I've even had them over for supper!

But it's true, the shit-kicker "I'm so ignorant I'm smart" Texan has always rubbed me wrong.

Because everything's bigger in Texas, cha'll knowed that, didn'cha?
