I used to run that, it's interesting. I stopped because the mpeg files for those visualizations ended up taking about 8 gigs, and it's limited to 640x480 I believe.

SpaceOddity, at the sheep settings you can specify how much HD space you give to sheep. The resolution is quite low because a higher resolution would take much longer to render. It still looks quite good in motion. I hope they upgrade the resolution some time in the future.

Perhaps they will create a "best of" gallery with high-res versions of the most popular ones.

I'm not seeing how this is any better than milkdrop or even the earlier Geiss releases for Winamp. Same kind of effect at far higher resolutions plus it responds to music.

1) They are a form of generative art, with a genetic code recieving input from users to guide the procreation of codes

2) the results are way more beautiful than MD or geiss (and I do like them both)

3) For those who grew up with fractals from Fractint, this new generation of fractals is just mindblowing

4) the syncing to the music part of those visualization plugins is overated. Just run electricsheep while playing music and you can swear it is responding to the music

The patterns Electric Sheep creates are much more complex than Geiss or Milkdrop. If you download it you'll see that the quality is better than this clip.

My coworker has this on his desktop. I never knew what it was until now, all I knew was that even when it's across an entire room from you, just catching it out of the corner of your eye can instantly mesmerize you for a good several seconds. It's a must-see in person, the video doesn't do it justice.

While the sheep are quite nice, I was disappointed by the way it all works. It's a bittorrent client that downloads mpegs and plays them as a screensaver. It seems rather inefficient to me. Certainly, these could be rendered in real time on any computer made in at least the last 5 years? Downloads would be drastically smaller then, as it could just be plaintext algorithms.

Also probably the only screensaver to require firewall reconfiguration.

Look in to the sofware, generating these fractals cost many hours of computer time.

I showed my friend this a couple weeks ago. It's really a lot of fun

Downloaded the screensaver, installed it and started getting BSODs on my XP install. Disabled the screensaver and haven't had a BSOD yet.
