Deranged Penguin Heads Toward Certain Death

"Is there such thing as insanity among penguins?..."

from Werner Herzog's Antarctica documentary 'Encounters at the End of the World', nominated for an Academy Award.
Psychologicsays...

Could be a brain tumor or something... or perhaps a gene mutation.

There is a pond in front of the place I work where there are usually lots of geese. There was one in particular that appeared to have a large tumor on its head and acted very oddly. It would go up to cars in the parking lot and "talk" to it's reflection in the bumper. Perhaps it was trying to mate... who knows.

Other geese wouldn't go near it, possibly due to its unsocial behavior. I think it eventually got hit by a car or something. Sometimes animals do strange things... they have medical and psychological problems just like people do.

And what are humans doing in Antarctica, thousands of kilometers from their own habitat?

Though they have brought some supplies with them, these will be eventually exhausted. Given long enough in such a harsh climate, the humans can only last so long. Alas, all we can do for these disoriented or deranged humans heading towards certain death, is play sad choral and violin music. The poor creatures.

Tells you a lot about our various cultures:
- When an American thinks of a penguin, he imagines a tap-dancing baby penguin.
- When a Frenchman thinks of a penguin, he imagines lots of penguins making baby penguins.
- When a German thinks of a penguin, he ponders about certain death.

Rugilsays...

If I was an alien from a civilization vastly superior to ours, this is how I would view our current behavior. Then I'd put it up on intergalactic VideoSift for some sweet siftage.

He's doing this for the same reason why people will smell something after someone comes up to them and says, "this smells like shit, smell it".

We will never know.

Jesus told him to go to the mountains because the great flood was coming.. and the fish would come TO HIM. There he would see a flaming bush (nevermind there are no such bushes in the antarctic... but who ever let facts get in the way of faith).

kymbossays...

This guy does some weird docos. He did Grizzley Man, right?

I know Little Penguins get heatstroke and wander about in the sun when it gets too hot. They also can't cope with fire - the poor things try to preen the fire off their feathers if they get caught in a bushfire.

How cool would it be to get a bit tired of walking, so you flop down on your belly and scoot along like a sled for a bit.

It's obvious that with this ability he was going for the eXtreme downhill penguin belly slide, from the most treacherous peak he could find.

thepinkysays...

This is very melodramatic. IS HE INSANE? Psh. That's silly. You know how penguins have a "sense of direction" that tells them which way the ocean is? Well, the poor little guys is just disoriented. Maybe his ocean-detector is broken. Maybe he has an inner ear infection. But I doubt he's "deranged."

Path-finding routines can be a b*tch to code sometimes.

Dismiss pet. Jump down cliff. Call pet. Problem solved.

Only a very few will get this, and none will think it funny... except for me...
I amuse myself often.

rickegeesays...

the most wonderful thing about this clip is that herzog emphatically insists at the start of the film that he will not film anything involving penguins.

a penguin with that much determination shall not be deterred.

'even dwarfs started small' has still left scars on me.

He's actually doing it as a test to see how the humans will react. It's part of the 40 year human experiment the penguins are carrying out in Antartica to better understand human behaviour.

The penguins are as well doing this............. 'cos the humans hav'nt managed to figure out human behaviour.

lavollsays...

god's great nature is full of death, cruelty and horror. just ask the duck lady at the bottom of the pecking order in a flock. ducks are also cute and chubby right? but they will try things like drowning each other, bite a leg off, take turns chasing the bottom duck to death by exhaustion etc.
