Christian - Atheist Discussion on the Show 30 Days

Why would it occur to a Christian care what an atheist thinks or feels? They're just going to get Left Behind when the Rapture hits, right?
Incidentally, what happens if you're handcuffed to something when the Rapture comes? Does God's almighty vacuum take along what you're handcuffed to, or do you lose a limb for Christ?

I'm so glad that clip included the last bit...it's a little known fact that seems to escape the Christian community.

And Theo...didn't you know? It's a sin to be handcuffed to anything...because either you have been arrested for breaking the law or are engaging in something contrary to the Missionary Position. That gets you one ticket to hell. And limbs are not required in Hell.

theo, I had a camp preacher once tell us (as children here) that when the rapture happened everyone's bodies would be taken up...but the blood would be left behind. Pretty gory huh? He also said that the damned souls were actual worms slithering in torment. He told us these lovely stories has he chalk drew murals of people burning in hell. Nice summers.

I was scared to death as a kid of 'the rapture'...didn't want my dog left alone.

daphnesays...

Oh yikes. Poor kid.

You know, that might have been the reason I stopped believing my family's religious code...when my dog died, they told me he wouldn't go to Heaven. SCREW that noise!

Very kinky Daphne.

I heard some crazy stuff about the Rapture, all of them seemed to change from pastor to pastor (back in RE). But there is an easy way, seemingly at the end of it all you can accept Jesus into your heart you will be saved. Which is one of the reasons Christianity gained so much popularity when it was developing because no religion before that had a component that allowed forgiveness at the end.

Yikes, you *did* have it rough, swampgirl. Hadn't heard the "blood" version - were you doubly mad when you found out "the Rapture" isn't even in the Bible at all?
The worst I remember as a kid was being terrified having the last word said before going to bed being "(and deliver us from) evil".

Ya'll had it good. As a young catholic, we never got any cool stories of rapture of kick ass jesus coming back to exact his revenge. It was always "sin this" and "guilt that" and "intimate questions about sex during confession" as a 12 year old boy...

yea, atheism is the way to go....

cobaltsays...

In our existentialist, post-modernist society, the real problem with religious debates is that no one can win and you can't change anyone's opinion. Without absolute morals that apply in every situation an atheist has trouble arguing their case to a theist. On the other hand, having a set of absolute morals dictated by a religious text means that a theist can never convince a true atheist that religion is the correct choice.

Our culture is increasingly secular and thus the belief in "absolute morals" is declining and the concept of "personal morals" becomes prevalent. With a "personal moral" system based on existentialism the mere idea of trying to covince someone else that your moral code is correct actually runs contray to *everybodys'* morals, even if they do not realise it. In other words: You cannot promote freedom of belief while trying to convert everybody to your way of thinking.

Personally I am an atheist existentialist but without a post-modernism agenda. I believe that humans are all guided by an evolved internal moral code, developed due to our social nature. "Evil" is anything that is opposed to that natural concience. A person always knows they are doing wrong on some level, they just learn to ignore those instincts. Thus as long as each religion (or individual) sticks to that moral compass, the specifics and any extra morals (e.g. no sex before marriage) are irrelevant.
