CNN's Rick Sanchez Reports: Police Beating Caught On Video - 5 Cops Fired In Birmingham, Alabama - 05/20/09

It's rare and shocking to hear that police are being actually disciplined for brutality. Apparently this police force has no protocol for high-speed chases and adrenaline rage. At least the suspect got jail time for attempted murder.

Son of a bitch deserved it.
Attempt to kill a cop, get your ass beat.

Attempting to run over a cop is the same as firing a gun at a cop. It's too bad the tax-paying citizens of Alabama not only have to pay for this animal's incarceration but the training of 5 more cops.

No one at the Communist News Network will say anything about the disproportionately high number of violent crimes committed by Black men versus their small percentage of the population, the victims of whom are mostly Black folks.

I dunno, I'm kinda torn on this one: I'm usually appalled by police excessive force, but the guy clearly hits a cop with his van... I'm thinking that would piss off the other cops understandably.

There is no question that this guy "deserved" a beating. HOWEVER, we cannot allow our "peace" officers to deliver that well deserved beating at the time of arrest. Their function at that point is to secure the suspect, and prevent any harm from happening to any more people, including the suspect.

Anybody who cannot prioritize their job responsibilities above their rage MUST be removed from law enforcement, ASAP.

Kudos to this department for firing those officers swiftly, but they still messed up by not delivering the video to the suspects defense counsel in a timely manner.

^MaxWilder said it right. I'm glad there is at least one example now of cops being fired after doing something stupid. I'm tired of cops just being suspended for a while and reinstated once everyone forgets about it. I was starting to think cops could get away with anything.

The resolution give me hope.

If the cops can be fired in this case where the suspect clearly tried to kill an officer, then hopefully we can see a high standard applied in less extreme situations, which covers 90% of the cases.

Well the police are human. The suspect tried to run over one of their brothers. I think you would do the same. I would. IMO, it's got nothing to do with black or white.

The whole reason we have laws and people to enforce them in the first place. Without the dispassionate enforcement of the law, we have mob rule.

There's no question that he deserved the snot beaten out of him, from a purely human standpoint, I would have wanted to do the same thing. But as these are enforcers of the law, they don't have that "luxury". If they can't separate their personal feelings from their job, they do not belong in those uniforms.

protecting the public also means protecting people from themselves when needed. and you are not judge and executioner when you are a police offers, even though some of them clearly thinks so.
