Bill Maher - New Rules (Feb.19.2010)

Not bad, I like the assessment of the Tea Party Cult, we should always remember these people are our fellow citizens. Their complaints and concerns stem from somewhere, that should be investigated not dismissed.

Stormsingersays...

If his numbers are correct, and only 2% know that taxes have gone down for the vast majority of people...then no, there is no reason to waste time investigating their complaints. They're either a cover to hide the actual reasons they're protesting (to judge by the signs that keep showing up at their rallies, it's racism), or they're delusions. Neither really justifies wasting time on them.

I don't want to come down on the side of the tea baggers... IMHO, they are brainwashed racists, and they deserve no respect. But on the other hand, I can find no information describing how 95% of Americans got tax cuts. If anybody has a link for that please let me know.

LeadingZerosays...

Maher didn't say that 95% of Americans got tax cuts.
Note that he said specifically, "For 95% of working families, taxes have gone down."
Obama also used the "working families" qualifier in his January 27th State of the Union speech, when he said, "We cut taxes. We cut taxes for 95 percent of working families."

So while a bit of a rhetorical sleight of hand, apparently it is more or less a correct statement.

Well, if Obama included Americans who are too young or too old to earn a taxable wage, or unemployed in the broadest sense of the word, in the denominator, it would be physically impossible to make a tax cut that covered 95% of the people, because half of them aren't paying any income tax to begin with.

Yawn... business as usual. IMHO, all signs are that progressives will lose congress and the presidency by 2016... being successful leaders means leading all of society.

And Bill raises a very important point, but it just gets brushed over.

"Socialist" = "Black"

Everyone who describes Obama as a Socialist is really just using that word to substitute for the one word the want to say. The RNC even put a Black man as their figurehead, so that people wouldn't immediately draw that conclusion. After all, if Michael Steele is saying it, how could it be construed as "racist?"

The reality is that "Socialist" has become a euphemism of sorts. The people who are using it to describe Obama have never read it's dictionary definition. It's just a convenient word for them to throw around, it makes them sound smart, and the right-wing mainstream media has already made it a dirty one.

So the next time you hear some white guy on TV calling Obama or his policies "Socialist," remember, he's just using it because he can't say the N-word.
