WTF is a home owner's association, and how can they just take your home and sell it off?

If you own your home free and clear what gives the HOA the right to sell your house?

Here's the thing. You chose to live under the HOA by signing the contract. They often have to much power.

Fuck the HOA, we had to fight them tooth and nail to paint our house a slightly different shade of brown. This goes waaaayyy beyond something petty like paint color choice.

I thought it was going to be a case where the guy didn't have a wife or something, but she straight up neglected her responsibilities? That's not good.

That does seem like an extreme solution; selling the home, but still...come on. She even had 6 months to get it back and she still didn't read the mail. Which begs another question, "why was he gone for that long?"
