Amazing Video of Stingray Giving Birth

A captured stringray gives birth right on the pier. According to LiveLeak 'Mother and off-spring swam away safe and sound.' I sure hope so!

WikiPedia: Stingrays are ovoviviparous, bearing live young in "litters" of five to thirteen. The female holds the embryos in the womb without a placenta. Instead, the embryos absorb nutrients from a yolk sac, and after the sac is depleted, the mother provides uterine "milk".

As unexpected and amazing as it is to see, that guy took a little too long getting them all back into the water in my opinion.

Yeah, seems just a little bit cruel... but fascinating. Maybe he was just mesmerized and not just being an asshole about it.

Totally awesome ~ but obviously the stingray was in distress and had to give birth right then in case she was a goner...

Does camera guy think fish normally crawl onto dry land and swear off oxygen for 6 minutes while giving birth?

As a liveleak commenter said "the videographer is an idiot, you do realize these creatures breath water not air you dumbfuck. "

jimnmssays...

They probably have brain damage now from not being able to breathe for the first 5 minutes of their life. The mother is probably going to die now swimming around with a fish hook and piece of string in her mouth.

I'm torn. I kind of want to downvote the video because of how abhorrent it is to watch this creature struggle to give birth. Those things are meant to give birth underwater, not in the air.

laurasays...

...yeah, on second look around, I don't see any professionally shot underwater stingray births on film...but rather a plethora of stingrays which have been caught and are giving birth under duress...in darned near all of them, someone in the background is saying something to the effect of "oh, it's lucky we're here" or "we're doing her a favor"
How pretentious, now I'm sick.
I guess I'm saying that in hindsight I can see that no, you weren't just in the right place at the right time, you CAUSED it prematurely.

I say good, we don't want anymore of our Crocodile Hunters getting killed horribly. I say fill their habitats with oil!

Ah the miracle of birth. While a metal hook attached to your face confines you in a hostile, asphyxiating environment. Looked pretty cruel to me, rather like most other catch-and-release fishing situations.

Haha. Yeah, it was in the news a few years ago that a stingray jumped over a boat and stung a woman in the heart while in mid-air, killing her.

Live Birth?
I thought only Mammals had live birth! (that's a defining attribute mammals)
Where are the eggs?

Most mammals do have live birth (viviparous), but are certainly not the only group to do so; some fish and reptiles also do this.

Sharks are often viviparous, but can also be oviparous (egg-laying) or ovoviviparous (eggs develop inside the body and are born live).

I appreciate everyone's concern for my species. I feel all warm and fuzzy.

Concern? Fuck you, you TV Show presenter murdering fucks! We'll have all of your babies if we have to suffocate them One by One! Hopefully in some sort of Ironic way that I'm not clever enough to think of yet.

Oh get off your high horses. If it was so bad, then why is this video in the top 15

I don't condone what the guy did, but its a little late to be bitching about it now. Enough with the hindsight self-righteousness.

There's a difference between upvoting because you like a video, and upvoting because you want to sensationalize a bad one.

Just saying.

I laughed at the video's end, right after he stops sweating and yelps out in relief "Away she goo-o-es!".
Dude, you are an asshole.
I mean, to be curious is one thing, but to LET THIS MOTHER give BIRTH 3 times while she is gasping (and you could hear that, COULDN'T YOU!) that is sick.
I think you should sell the beach house and retire where you can only harm ants and blades of grass. Need to go back to school where they try and teach you that fish should be IN WATER, unless you're gonna EAT THEM!
I wonder how you'd enjoy this video if your wife or lady friend were to be forced to give birth underwater for 5 whole minutes, with a hook in her mouth.
I hope you realize what a heartless piece of trash you are perceived as, now. You selfish fucking moron. CRUEL PIECE OF SHIT. And no, you wouldn't just get forgiveness if you donated 50$ to the local aquarium.
MEGA FAIL.

Ah! that felt good.
