I'm looking forward to the days when we won't be able to believe living in a world where the internet isn't utterly transparent and ubiquitous. Where our computers are still essentially boxes that we have to type into and look at with our eyes. Charles Stross' future from Accelerando or Vernor Vinge's future from Rainbow's End are closer than you might think. The truth is we've come an AMAZING distance since 1994, and the space between today and 2018 or 2022 is greater than either of those novels posits. Well.... maybe the later parts of Accelerando...

Haha this really cracked me up. For me, the "early days" are right around this time: 14.4 modems; BBS accounts for $40/mo to connect to two or three 500MB hard drives' worth of content; having to create special boot disks to free up enough memory to run the best DOS games; and right around this time computer and game magazines started including CD-ROMS with free software and game demos.
